Madlib and Four Tet posted their new “Hopprock” collaboration joint set to feature on the pair’s upcoming Sound Ancestors album.
Their newest single opens with deep strings, chimes and a rainstick reminiscent of Four Tet‘s style, clocking in at roughly three and a half minutes.
With Madlib‘s recording machine sample and sharp hi-hats and drum beat, the calm climate is broken shortly after, producing a hypnotizing track from the two.
“Hopprock” follows December 2020’s “Road of the Lonely Ones” by Four Tet and Madlib. An exact release date is not yet available for Sound Ancestors, but the IDM pioneer has previously confirmed that the album has been in the works for a few years now.
He still makes tons of music in all kinds of styles and when I had the idea that it would be cool to hear some of these ideas turned into a Madlib solo album, I listened to some of his new beats and studio sessions.
Not made into beats to be used by vocalists, but instead organized into tracks that could all blend together in an album intended to be listened to begin and end, Four Tet explained.
When we were hanging out enjoying some nice food one day, I put this idea to him and we agreed to work on it together with him giving me tracks, loops, thoughts and tests that I would organize, edit, manipulate and combine.
I was sent hundreds of pieces of music over a couple of years, and I put this album together with all the sections that matched my vision during that period.
